Maud is a young woman from the working class, its long-wearing days in a laundry. Since her teens she works herself to pieces under poor working conditions including a boss who can not keep his hands at home. Maud finds happiness with her family and especially her son George. When one day they witnessed a fierce public attack of some Suffragettes is there something inside her awakened. The Suffragettes fighting for equal rights for women through violence. Slowly but surely Maud is increasingly involved in the fight with big consequences for her and her family.
2015 can already be called the year of the woman. Feminism is a hot topic and famous women ask for it all year much attention. Whether Emma Watson with her successful campaign HeforShe or Patricia Arquette and Jennifer Lawrence who speak out against unequal pay for women in Hollywood. "Suffragette" from British director Sarah Gavron also has the perfect timing. Even though one of the first feminist movements from the history center, yet there are enough parallels to draw the economic and social situation of women in 2015 ,
The Suffragettes were courageous women after seeing the film for sure. Most of them came from the lower working class and had a lot to lose. Peaceful protests brought no results and thus the women turned to violence because, as Maud so beautiful displays: "War is the only language they listen to." Even wealthy women were Suffragettes, but who could afford protests and arrests. They could pay their deposit while women like Maud indeed went into prison and put their jobs at risk. It is a missed opportunity by director Gavron which they are no longer focused on the differences between the women. Because there will be enough tensions arise in real life.
The sets and decoration of 'Suffragette' look fine and the working class atmosphere can be felt. Yet Gavron late here and stabbing attack there. The beginning of the film is a bit slow and the violent scenes Gavron lapses occasionally into melodrama. Too bad, because the film has a strong message of itself and does not need one at all. However, a good find are statistics on voting rights for women to be read in the credits. The fight for equal rights for women is a hundred years after the existence of the Suffragettes still not over.
